Dryer Won’t Start? What to Check First
No lights, no hum, or a hum with no spin. Work through power, the door and the start switch, and know when it is time to call.

When a dryer will not start, work outward from the outlet: power, then the door, then the start button. A dead dryer with no sound points to the breaker, the cord, the door switch, the start switch, or a thermal fuse on some models. A hum with no drum movement points to the motor, the belt or a seized part. Check the breaker and door first, then call.
Key takeaways
- Check the breaker, the door latch and any control lock first.
- No sound at all points to power, a door or start switch, or a thermal fuse on some models.
- A hum with a still drum points to the motor or a seized part.
- Turn off and unplug a humming dryer rather than keep trying.
What the dryer does tells you what failed
| What you see and hear | Likely causes |
|---|---|
| Completely dead: no lights, no sound | Tripped breaker (both halves on an electric dryer), outlet or power cord problem, terminal block, a thermal fuse on some models, control board |
| Lights on, but nothing when you press Start | Door switch, start switch, control lock turned on, a thermal fuse on some models |
| Hums, but the drum does not turn | Motor, or a seized drum roller or idler pulley |
| Motor runs, but the drum does not turn | A broken drive belt |
| Starts, then stops after a few seconds | Door switch losing contact, or the high-limit thermostat tripping from overheating |
Why won’t my dryer turn on at all?
A dryer that is completely dead usually has lost power. Check the breaker, since an electric dryer needs both halves on, and make sure the plug is seated. If power is fine, the door switch, start switch, thermal fuse on some models, or the control board may have failed.
Five quick checks before you call
- Breaker. An electric dryer needs both halves of its double breaker on. Switch it fully off, then on.
- Door. Close it firmly and check that nothing, such as a sock or a sleeve, is caught in the latch.
- Control lock. Many newer dryers have a lock or child-lock setting that blocks the Start button. Check your manual for how to turn it off.
- The Start button. Many push-to-start dryers need the button held for a moment before they run.
- The power cord. Look for a cord that is crushed behind the dryer or a plug that has worked loose. Unplug before touching it.

What is the control lock on a dryer?
Many newer dryers have a control lock or child lock that blocks the buttons so a cycle cannot start. It is switched on and off with a button or a button-hold that varies by model, so check the manual. If the lock light is on, turn it off before assuming the dryer is broken.
The door switch and the start switch
A dryer will not run with the door open, so a door switch that has worn out or lost contact can stop it from starting or make it quit after a few seconds. The start switch does the same job for the Start button. Both are inexpensive parts, and a technician confirms which has failed with a meter, not by guessing.
How do I know if my dryer door switch is bad?
A bad door switch can make the dryer refuse to start with the door closed, stop after a few seconds, or run with the door open. You may not hear a click when the door closes. A technician tests it with a meter, and the part is usually inexpensive.
Why does my dryer start and then stop after a few seconds?
Common causes are a door switch that loses contact, a high-limit thermostat tripping from overheating, or an overloaded drum. Check that the door latches firmly, remove some clothes, and clear the vent. If it keeps stopping, have the switch and thermostat tested.
The thermal fuse can stop the whole dryer
On some models the thermal fuse sits in the motor circuit, so when it blows, the dryer will not start at all. It blows because the dryer overheated, and a packed vent is the usual reason. Replace the fuse without clearing the vent and it will blow again. See dryer takes too long to dry for the vent test.
Why does my dryer click but not start?
A click without a start can point to a start switch, a motor that is not turning, or a control fault. If the dryer also hums, the motor may be seized or blocked. Turn it off and unplug it rather than keep trying, and have the motor circuit tested.
Can a power outage or surge stop a dryer from starting?
Yes. An outage or surge can trip the breaker, blow a thermal fuse or damage the control board. Check the breaker first. If power is fine and the dryer stays dead, or you notice burning smells, stop using it and have it tested.
Can I fix a dryer that will not start myself?
Checks one to five are safe for anyone. A door switch or start switch can be replaced by a confident DIYer with the dryer unplugged. Leave terminal blocks, internal wiring, motors and control boards to a technician, and stop if you smell burning.
How do I reset a dryer that will not start?
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker for a few minutes, then restore power and try again. That clears minor control glitches on some models. If the breaker trips, the dryer hums without turning, or nothing changes, the reset has not fixed a real fault.
What it costs to fix a dryer that will not start
| Repair | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Door switch or start switch | $150–$250 |
| Thermal fuse or thermostat, plus vent check | $150–$275 |
| Drive belt or idler pulley | $200–$375 |
| Motor | $300–$550 |
| Control board | $300–$600+ |
Ranges include parts and labor. Not sure a repair is worth it on an older dryer? Read repair or replace a dryer, and see all prices in the cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my dryer hum but not spin?
A hum with no drum movement usually means the motor is trying to turn something that will not move, such as a seized drum roller or idler pulley, or the motor itself is failing. Turn it off and unplug it rather than keep trying.
Why does nothing happen when I press Start?
Common causes are a door that is not fully latched, a control lock setting, a worn door switch, a failed start switch, or a blown thermal fuse on some models. Check the breaker and the lock first.
Can a bad door switch stop a dryer from starting?
Yes. The dryer will not run unless the door switch tells it the door is closed, so a worn switch can stop it from starting or make it stop shortly after.
Can a blown thermal fuse stop a dryer from starting?
On some models, yes, because the fuse is in the motor circuit. On others it only stops the heat. A meter test shows whether it has failed.
How much does it cost to fix a dryer that will not start?
Most fixes run about $150 to $400 including parts and labor, depending on the failed part. A door or start switch is at the low end and a motor or control board at the high end.
Is it safe to keep trying to start a humming dryer?
No. A motor that hums without turning can overheat. Turn the dryer off, unplug it, and call for a diagnosis.
