A dryer that spins but does not heat has lost its heat circuit or its power. On an electric dryer, check that both halves of the double breaker are on, then suspect the thermal fuse, heating element or thermostat. On a gas dryer, suspect the igniter or the gas valve coils. A packed vent often causes the failure, so airflow has to be fixed too.
Key takeaways
- Check both halves of the breaker before anything else.
- Then clean the lint screen and look at the outside vent hood.
- A blown thermal fuse usually means an airflow problem, not just a bad fuse.
- Gas dryer with a glowing igniter and no flame? Suspect the valve coils.
Troubleshooting guide
Dryer not heating? Follow the path.
Pick your dryer type and work down. Each check takes minutes, and each answer tells you what to do next.
Electric dryer
- 1
Check the double breaker
Both halves must be on. One half tripped means the drum spins with no heat.
If off: switch fully off, then on - 2
Look at the lint screen and vent flap
Blocked airflow makes the dryer overheat and trips its safety parts.
If blocked: clear it first - 3
Meter-test fuse, thermostat, element
A technician confirms which part has failed instead of guessing.
Failed part found: replace it
Gas dryer
- 1
Gas valve open, dryer plugged in?
A gas dryer still needs 120 volts for the igniter and controls.
If closed or unplugged: fix that - 2
Does the igniter glow?
It should glow bright orange when the dryer calls for heat.
No glow: igniter, fuse or thermostat - 3
Does a flame light and stay on?
Glows, then goes out with no flame? That points away from the igniter.
No flame: gas valve coils
Stop. Leave the house, do not flip switches, and from a safe distance call 911 and Atmos Energy at 866.322.8667.
Step 1: confirm it really is not heating
Run the dryer empty on high for about ten minutes, then stand at the outside vent hood. Warm, strong air means the heat works and the problem is airflow (see dryer takes too long to dry). Cool air, or a weak trickle, points to the heat circuit. Also make sure the dryer is not on an air-fluff or no-heat setting.
What is the first thing to check when a dryer stops heating?
Check the breaker. An electric dryer needs both halves of its double breaker on, and a half-tripped breaker leaves the drum spinning with no heat. If the breaker is fine, clean the lint screen, check the outside vent hood, and then look at the thermal fuse, element or igniter.
How long should a dryer take to heat up?
Within a few minutes on a heat setting, the air at the outside vent hood should feel warm. If it is still cool or only faintly warm after about ten minutes on high with an empty drum, the heat circuit is probably at fault.
Step 2: five quick checks before you call
- Breaker. An electric dryer needs both halves of its double breaker on. If only one tripped, the drum still turns but there is no heat. Switch it fully off, then on.
- Lint screen. Clean it, and wash it with soap and water. Fabric-softener film clogs the mesh even when it looks clean.
- Outside hood. The flap should open when the dryer runs, and nothing should be nesting in it.
- Load size. A tightly packed drum dries poorly. Try a smaller load.
- Gas dryers. Confirm the gas valve behind the dryer is open. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 and Atmos Energy at 866.322.8667.
Why does my dryer heat sometimes but not always?
Intermittent heat usually points to a failing thermostat, a loose or corroded connection, or a vent restriction that makes the dryer overheat and shut the heat off. On gas dryers, a weak igniter can cause the same pattern. A technician can test each part and check airflow.
Why is my dryer only warm instead of hot?
Weak heat often means restricted airflow that makes the dryer cycle its heat off, or a partly failed heating circuit. Clean the lint screen and check the vent hood first. If airflow is strong and clothes still dry slowly, have the element, thermostats and, on gas dryers, the burner tested.
Can a dirty lint screen stop a dryer from heating?
Yes, indirectly. A clogged lint screen or vent restricts airflow, the dryer overheats, and safety parts such as the high-limit thermostat or thermal fuse cut the heat. Clear the lint screen after every load and wash it with soap and water regularly to remove softener film.
Electric dryer: likely causes
| Cause | How it is tested | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| One half of the breaker tripped | Breaker and outlet voltage | No repair cost |
| Blown thermal fuse | Continuity with a meter; the vent is checked as the likely cause | $150–$275 |
| Failed heating element | Continuity with a meter; the element is replaced, not repaired | $200–$350 |
| Bad thermostat or high-limit | Continuity with a meter | $150–$275 |
Gas dryer: likely causes
| Cause | How it is tested | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Failed gas valve coils | Meter on the coils while we watch a full ignition cycle | $200–$375 |
| Failed igniter | Continuity, and whether it glows | $200–$375 |
| Flame sensor or burner problem | Burner and sensor inspection | $150–$300 |
| Blown thermal fuse or tripped high-limit | Continuity, then airflow | $150–$275 |

Why does my dryer keep blowing the thermal fuse?
A thermal fuse blows when the dryer overheats, and the usual reason is restricted airflow from a packed vent or crushed duct. Replacing the fuse alone fixes the symptom for a few weeks. The lasting fix is clearing the vent and testing the thermostat as well.
Can I fix a dryer that is not heating myself?
Checks one to four above are safe for anyone. Replacing a thermal fuse or heating element on an electric dryer is possible if you are comfortable working around 240-volt wiring, with the dryer unplugged. Leave gas parts to a technician. Whatever you replace, clear the vent first or the new part will fail again.
Will resetting the breaker fix a dryer that will not heat?
It can, if only one half of the double breaker tripped. Switch the breaker fully off, then on. If heat returns, the dryer may have overloaded or had a brief fault. If the breaker trips again or heat does not return, stop and have the dryer tested.
How much does a thermal fuse replacement cost?
The fuse itself is an inexpensive part, but the repair also includes diagnosis and checking the vent. In the Plano area, a thermal fuse or thermostat repair typically costs about $150 to $275, parts and labor included. Clearing the vent is often part of the fix, since a blocked vent is usually why the fuse blew.
When to call a technician
- The breaker is fine and the dryer still does not heat.
- It is a gas dryer and the igniter glows but no flame appears.
- The breaker trips again after you reset it.
- You smell burning, or the outside of the dryer is unusually hot.
- A part you replaced has failed again.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my dryer running but not heating?
The heat circuit has failed or lost power. On an electric dryer that is usually a half-tripped breaker, a blown thermal fuse, a failed element or a thermostat. On a gas dryer it is usually the igniter or the gas valve coils.
How do I know if the thermal fuse is blown?
A meter test shows it: a good fuse has continuity and a blown one does not. Unplug the dryer before testing. A technician also checks the vent, because a packed vent is the usual reason a fuse blows.
Is it the heating element or the thermal fuse?
Both are common. A blown fuse often points to an airflow problem, while an element usually fails from age or overheating. We test both rather than guess.
Does a gas dryer need electricity to heat?
Yes. A gas dryer needs a 120-volt supply for the igniter, motor and controls. If the dryer has no power at all, the gas system never gets its signal.
How much does it cost to fix a dryer that is not heating?
Most fixes run about $150 to $375 including parts and labor, depending on the failed part. You get the exact price in writing before work starts.
Is it okay to keep running a dryer that does not heat?
It is better to find the cause first. If a blocked vent is behind the problem, repeated use keeps stressing the dryer, and a burning smell means stop and unplug it.
