Dryer Door Switch and Start Switch

Two small switches stop a surprising number of dryers. Here is what each does, how a technician tests them and what a repair costs.

Hands removing the door switch at the front of a dryer

The door switch tells the dryer the door is closed, and the start switch begins the cycle. When either fails, the dryer will not start, stops mid-cycle or ignores the Start button. Both are tested with a meter and are among the smaller repairs, typically about $150 to $250 in Plano, but check the door latch and alignment first.

Key takeaways

  • The door switch must close before the motor runs, so a failing one can leave the dryer dead.
  • A door that looks shut may not press the switch, so check the latch and alignment too.
  • A dryer that stops when the door shifts points to a worn switch or latch.
  • Typical repair: about $150 to $250. Never bypass the door switch.

What each switch does

PartWhat it doesWhen it fails
Door switchDetects that the door is closed, and stops the drum when it opensDryer will not start, or stops when the door shifts
Start switchSends the start signal, as a push-to-start knob or a buttonDryer ignores Start, or starts only sometimes
Door latch and catchHolds the door shut and presses the door switchDoor does not catch, so the switch never closes
Belt switchOn some models, shuts the motor off if the belt breaksDryer seems dead after a belt breaks

What does a dryer door switch do?

The door switch tells the dryer the door is closed, and the motor will not run until it is. It also stops the drum when you open the door mid-cycle, which is a safety feature. If the switch is worn, misaligned or broken, the dryer behaves as if the door were always open.

What does the start switch do?

The start switch sends the signal that begins the cycle. On many dryers it is a push-to-start knob, and on others a button on the control panel. When its contacts wear, the dryer ignores Start or starts only now and then, even though the door and power are fine.

Signs a switch has failed

What you noticeLikely cause
Silent when you press Start, door shutDoor switch, start switch, thermal fuse or power
Starts only if you press the door inA worn door switch or latch
Stops mid-cycle when the door shiftsA worn door switch or a loose latch
The drum light stays on with the door shutA door switch that is stuck or misaligned
Hum or click, but no startMotor, belt or belt switch rather than the door switch

Why won’t my dryer start even though the door is closed?

The door may not be pressing the switch fully, or the switch may be worn or broken. Press the door firmly and hold Start. If it then starts, the latch or switch is the problem. If not, the start switch, the thermal fuse or the power supply is next, and a meter test finds which.

Why does my dryer stop when I bump the door?

A worn door switch or a loose latch loses contact when the door shifts, so the dryer thinks the door opened and stops. It usually gets worse over time. Check that the latch catches firmly and the door sits square, and have the switch tested if it keeps happening.

How a technician tests them

  1. The dryer is unplugged before any panel is opened.
  2. The door switch is pressed by hand to see whether it clicks and the dryer responds.
  3. A meter checks continuity across the door switch and start switch with the switch pressed and released.
  4. The latch, catch and door alignment are inspected, because a bent door can stop the switch from closing.
  5. The thermal fuse and belt switch are tested too, if the switches test good.

How do I test a dryer door switch?

With the dryer unplugged, press the switch plunger by hand and listen for a click, then check continuity across it with a meter while it is pressed and released. A good switch shows continuity when pressed and none when released. A switch that tests good points to the latch or the next part in the chain.

Never bypass the door switch

Bypassing the door switch removes the safety stop that halts the drum when the door opens, and a moving drum can injure someone reaching in. The part is inexpensive to replace, so there is no reason to bypass it.

Can I bypass the door switch to get my dryer running?

No. The door switch stops the drum when the door opens, so bypassing it creates an injury risk, and it hides the real fault. The switch is inexpensive and quick to replace, so the safe fix is to replace it. If the dryer still will not start, the cause is somewhere else.

What it costs in Plano

RepairTypical cost (parts and labor)
Door switch or start switch$150 to $250
Thermal fuse or thermostat$150 to $275
Belt, idler pulley or drum rollers$200 to $375

How much does a dryer door switch or start switch repair cost in Plano?

Typical Plano-area cost is about $150 to $250, parts and labor included. The switch itself is inexpensive, so most of the price is the diagnosis and labor. If the latch or door is also worn, it can add to the job. These are estimates, not a quote, so ask for the exact price in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bad door switch stop a dryer mid-cycle?

Yes. If the switch loses contact because it is worn or the door shifts, the dryer stops as if the door had opened. If the dryer restarts when you press the door in, the switch or latch is the likely cause.

Is the door switch the same as the door latch?

They are different parts that work together. The latch holds the door shut and presses the switch, and the switch tells the controls the door is closed. Either can fail, and both are checked when a dryer will not start.

Why does my dryer light stay on?

If the dryer has a drum light, a light that stays on with the door shut can mean the door switch is stuck or the door is not pressing it. It is worth having the switch checked, because the same fault can stop the dryer starting.

Do all dryers have a start switch?

Most do, but the type differs. Older dryers use a push-to-start knob, and many newer ones use a button and the control board. Which you have changes which part is tested, and the model number matters.

Can a loose door cause a dryer not to start?

Yes. A door that does not align with the latch will not press the switch, so the dryer will not start. A bent door, a worn catch or a loose hinge can cause it, and the fix may be the latch rather than the switch.

What if the dryer hums but the switches test good?

Then the cause is likely the belt, a seized roller, the motor or a belt switch. A humming dryer should be turned off and unplugged rather than left running. See the won’t-start guide and the motor page.
