Signs Your Dryer Vent Is Clogged
A clogged vent rarely announces itself. These seven signs, and a ten-minute test, tell you whether yours needs clearing.

The main signs of a clogged dryer vent are clothes that need two cycles, a dryer or laundry room that feels hot or humid, a burning or hot-dust smell, an outside flap that barely opens and a thermal fuse that keeps blowing. A ten-minute airflow test confirms it. If you smell burning, stop the dryer and unplug it first.
Key takeaways
- Clothes needing two cycles is the most common first sign.
- A hot dryer, a humid laundry room or a burning smell means heat is not leaving.
- The ten-minute airflow test confirms it with no tools.
- Stop at once if you smell burning, and clear the vent before the next load.
The seven signs
| Sign | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Clothes need two cycles | Moist air is not leaving the drum | Run the ten-minute test |
| The dryer cabinet or the top feels very hot | Heat is trapped inside | Stop and check the vent |
| The laundry room is hot or humid | Exhaust is leaking or not leaving | Check behind the dryer and the hood |
| A burning or hot-dust smell | Lint is scorching | Stop, unplug the dryer and clear the vent |
| The outside flap barely opens | A blocked duct or hood | Clear the hood, then the duct |
| Lint around the door, base or hood | A joint is loose or the run is packed | Inspect the duct connections |
| A thermal fuse that keeps blowing | The dryer is overheating | Clear the vent, then test the fuse |
What are the first signs of a clogged dryer vent?
The earliest sign is usually clothes that need two cycles to dry. After that come a dryer that feels hot, a humid laundry room, a burning or hot-dust smell and an outside flap that barely opens. If you notice any of these, run the ten-minute airflow test before the next load.
Confirm it with the ten-minute test
- Clean the lint screen and empty the drum.
- Run the dryer on high for about ten minutes.
- Go outside and feel the air at the hood: it should be strong and warm.
- Check that the flap opens wide and stays open.
- If the air is weak or the flap barely moves, the vent is restricted.
Can a clogged vent make my dryer stop heating?
Yes. Restricted airflow overheats the dryer, which trips the high-limit thermostat or blows the thermal fuse, and either one cuts the heat. So a dryer that tumbles with no heat, or one that stops and restarts after cooling, can have a vent problem, not a failed heater. See the not-heating guide.
What to do next
- Stop using the dryer until the vent is checked, especially if you smell burning.
- Clear the lint screen, the lint housing and the outside hood.
- Clear the duct with a brush kit and vacuum, or have a technician do it.
- Rerun the ten-minute test, and watch whether drying returns to one normal cycle.
- If a thermal fuse or thermostat has failed, replace it only after the vent is clear.
Is it dangerous to keep using a dryer with a clogged vent?
Yes. A clogged vent makes the dryer run hotter for longer, which wears the heat parts and raises the fire risk, because lint is fuel. NFPA data list failure to clean as the leading cause of dryer fires. On a gas dryer a blocked vent also adds a carbon monoxide risk. Clear it before the next load.
How long can I wait before clearing a clogged vent?
Not long. Each load runs hotter than it should, so the safest approach is to stop using the dryer until the vent is cleared, especially if there is any burning smell. If you cannot clear it right away, hang the laundry to dry and book a vent check. See the cleaning guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have a clogged vent even if the lint screen is clean?
Yes. The screen catches most lint but not all, and the rest builds up in the housing, the duct and the hood. A clean screen is good, but the full run still needs checking about once a year.
Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry?
Restricted airflow is the most common reason. Lint in the duct, a crushed hose or a stuck outside flap traps moist air in the drum. Run the ten-minute test, and clear the vent if the air at the hood is weak.
What does a burning smell from the dryer mean?
Often lint scorching on a hot surface, which can come from a blocked vent. Stop the dryer, unplug it and do not use it again until it has been checked. See the burning smell guide for how to tell the causes apart.
Do vent problems get worse over time?
Yes. Lint builds up gradually, so a vent that was fine last year can be restricted now, and a restricted vent makes the dryer run hotter, which speeds wear. That is why a yearly check is worth it.
Can I check the vent hood without any tools?
Yes. Run the dryer and watch the outside flap: it should open wide, with strong, warm air coming out. A flap that barely moves, or lint or a nest around it, means the hood or duct needs clearing.
