This dryer vent FAQ answers 30 common questions on lint and fire safety, testing airflow, duct and hood rules, cleaning and special cases. Failure to clean is the leading cause of dryer fires, so a clear vent matters. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 and Atmos Energy at 866.322.8667.
Key takeaways
- Failure to clean is the leading cause of dryer fires, so lint control comes first.
- A clean lint screen does not mean a clean vent: check the full run about once a year.
- Vent outdoors only, with short, smooth metal duct and no screen on the hood.
- Gas dryers add a carbon monoxide risk when the vent is blocked or disconnected.
Fire and safety
What causes a dryer vent fire?
Lint is fuel, and heat ignites it. A restricted vent makes the dryer run hotter for longer, so lint in the duct, the housing or the cabinet can ignite, especially if a thermostat or fuse has also failed. NFPA data list failure to clean as the leading cause of dryer fires.
What should I do if I see smoke from the vent hood?
Stop the dryer, and if you can do so safely, unplug it. Keep the dryer door closed, get everyone out of the house and call 911. Do not open the door to look, and do not try to fight a fire in the duct yourself. Have the dryer and the whole vent checked before using it again.
Does a clean lint screen mean a clean vent?
No. The screen catches most lint, but fine lint gets past it and builds up in the housing, the duct and the hood. A clean screen helps, and the full run still needs checking about once a year. The ten-minute airflow test shows what the screen cannot.
Can an electric dryer cause a vent fire?
Yes. The fire risk comes from lint and heat, not from the fuel. An electric dryer’s element can ignite lint just as a gas burner can, and a blocked vent makes either run hotter. The difference is that a gas dryer adds a carbon monoxide risk when the vent is blocked.
Are gas dryer vents more dangerous than electric ones?
Gas dryers add a carbon monoxide risk, because their exhaust carries combustion gases that a blocked or disconnected vent can push back into the home. The lint and fire risk is the same for both. Keep a working carbon monoxide alarm near the bedrooms if you have a gas dryer.
Should I have a smoke alarm in the laundry area?
Install smoke alarms as your local code requires, test them monthly, and make sure one is near the laundry area. A working alarm gives early warning if lint ignites. If you have a gas dryer, add a carbon monoxide alarm. An alarm does not replace a clean vent.
Testing and warning signs
How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged?
The usual signs are clothes that need two cycles, a dryer or laundry room that feels hot or humid, a burning or hot-dust smell, and an outside flap that barely opens. A weak trickle of air at the hood during the ten-minute test confirms it. See the vent safety guide.
Why is the outside of my dryer hot to the touch?
A dryer’s cabinet warms during a cycle, but one that feels very hot usually means heat is not leaving through the vent. Restricted airflow traps heat inside. If the cabinet is hot, clothes take two cycles or you smell burning, stop and check the vent before running another load.
Why does my laundry room feel humid?
A dryer’s exhaust is hot and moist, so a laundry room that turns humid while it runs suggests the air is leaking or not leaving: a blocked duct, a disconnected joint or a vent that ends indoors. Check behind the dryer and at the hood, and have the run inspected.
Is the ten-minute vent test reliable?
It is a good rough check, not a measurement. Strong, warm air at the hood and a flap that opens wide mean the vent is moving air, while a weak trickle means restriction. Compare it with how the dryer behaved when the vent was clean, and have a technician measure airflow if you are unsure.
Can a technician measure dryer airflow?
Yes. Technicians can measure the airflow or pressure in the duct with a gauge, which is more exact than the hand test. It is useful for long runs, many bends or a dryer that is slow even though the duct looks clear. Ask whether a measurement is part of the visit.
Duct, length and bends
How many bends are too many in a dryer vent?
There is no single number, because the manual sets the limit for your dryer. The model residential code reduces the allowed length for each elbow, so every bend shortens the run you can use. Fewer, gentler bends move air better, and a run with many sharp bends needs more frequent cleaning.
Can I use flexible foil duct behind the dryer?
Only if the manual allows it, and only for a short connection. Foil duct ridges trap lint, and it can crush or kink behind the dryer, which restricts airflow. Rigid or semi-rigid metal is the better choice, and thin foil should not be used inside walls or for the main run.
What diameter should dryer duct be?
Most dryers use 4-inch duct, but the manual for your model governs. Using a narrower duct restricts airflow, and a transition to a smaller size anywhere in the run is a common mistake. Keep the same diameter from the dryer to the hood, and check the connection at the back of the dryer.
Can two dryers share one vent?
Generally not. A shared duct can push exhaust and lint back toward the other dryer, and code and manufacturers usually require each dryer to have its own vent. Follow the manual and local code, and ask a technician before connecting two dryers to one duct.
Should I add a dryer vent booster fan?
Only if the manual and code allow it, and usually only for a long run. A booster fan can help move air but can also catch lint, so it needs regular cleaning and a way to alert you when it fails. Often a shorter, straighter duct is a better fix than adding a fan.
Can dryer duct run through a wall or floor?
It can, if the duct is metal, sealed and properly supported, but hidden runs are hard to inspect and clean. Keep them as short and straight as possible, make sure joints are accessible, and never run the duct into an attic, crawlspace or cavity where moist air can escape.
The hood and the outside
Where can a dryer vent terminate?
The vent must end outdoors, at a hood with a flap or louvers, and well away from windows, doors and air intakes so exhaust cannot re-enter the house. It should not end under a deck or in a window well. Check the manual and local code for the exact clearances.
Why is there lint outside near my dryer hood?
A little lint near the hood is normal, but a lot suggests the hood or duct is damaged or a joint has come apart, or that the run is blocked and lint is being forced out. Look at the hood and the duct, and have the run checked if you see large clumps.
Should I cover the vent hood in winter?
No. A covered or blocked hood stops the air leaving, which is the same as a blocked vent. If cold air comes in when the dryer is off, replace the hood with one whose flap closes tightly. Do not stuff, tape or block the opening.
How do I keep birds out of my vent hood?
Use a hood with a tight-fitting flap or louvers and no screen, because a screen traps lint and clogs. Check the hood every season and after storms, clear any nest at once and replace a hood whose flap is broken or missing.
Cleaning and maintenance
What is the best way to clean a dryer vent?
Unplug the dryer, disconnect the duct, and use a brush kit and vacuum to loosen and remove lint from both ends. Clear the lint housing and the hood too, then reconnect the duct securely and run the ten-minute test. A long or hard-to-reach run is better left to a technician.
Can I clear my dryer vent with a leaf blower?
It is not recommended. A leaf blower can force lint into the duct, pack it tighter at bends and blow it back into the house or the dryer. Use a brush kit and a vacuum, which pull the lint out, or have a technician clear the run with the right tools.
Do dryer vent cleaning kits work?
On a short, straight, accessible run, yes. A brush on flexible rods and a vacuum can remove most of the lint. On a long run, one with many bends or one through an attic, a kit may not reach the whole duct, and a technician’s tools are more thorough.
What does a professional vent clearing include?
Typically the reachable duct is brushed and vacuumed, the lint housing and outside hood are cleared and checked, and the airflow is tested afterward. Ask what is included, such as the full run, the hood and a reconnect, and ask for the price in writing before the work starts.
How much does vent cleaning cost in Plano?
Clearing a blocked vent typically costs about $100 to $200 in the Plano area when the run is reachable, and a long run or one through an attic or roof can cost more. These are estimates, not a quote, so ask for the exact price in writing. See the cost guide.
Special cases
Can I vent my dryer inside in winter to keep the heat?
No. Dryer exhaust carries moisture and lint, which cause mold and damage indoors, and on a gas dryer it carries combustion gases, which are dangerous. Indoor lint traps and diverters are not a safe substitute for a proper vent outdoors. Keep the vent connected and clear year-round.
What if my vent runs through the attic or roof?
Long vertical or roof runs are harder to inspect and clean, collect more lint at the turns and can trap moisture that condenses and drips. They need more frequent checks, and the hood on the roof needs a flap that closes. Ask a technician about the run before problems start.
What about shared vents in condos and apartments?
Some buildings use a shared stack or a long run in the walls. Do not modify it yourself. Tell the property manager if your dryer is slow or the vent seems blocked, because the building may be responsible for the shared duct. Keep your own connection and lint screen clear.
How can I tell if the duct has come apart inside the wall?
Warning signs are clothes that stay damp, lint or moisture around the base of the dryer or in the wall cavity, a humid laundry area and no air at the outside hood during the test. A technician can inspect the run to find the break, which may need opening the wall.
