Dryer Error Codes by Brand: Verified Meanings
Codes differ by brand and model, so the manual has the final word. Here are the codes we could verify, what each points to and what to check first.

Dryer error codes differ by brand and model, so your manual has the final word. This hub covers the codes we could verify: LG’s D80, D90 and D95 airflow warnings, Samsung’s groups for doors, temperature, overheating, voltage and buttons, and Whirlpool’s F01 control fault. For any other code, check the manual, write it down and tell us when you book.
Key takeaways
- Codes differ by brand, model and year, so check your manual for the exact meaning.
- LG D80, D90 and D95 point to a restricted vent, and Samsung HC codes point to overheating.
- Many codes trace back to a blocked vent, so clear it before anything else.
- A gas smell or a burning smell is never just a code: stop and treat it as a safety issue.
What to do for any code
- Write the code down exactly, with any letters in the same case.
- Look it up in your manual for your model, because meanings differ by model.
- Run the ten-minute vent test, and clean the lint screen: many codes trace back to airflow.
- Switch the dryer off and try once more after a short rest.
- If the code returns, tell us the brand, the model number and the code when you book.
What should I do when my dryer shows an error code?
Write the code down exactly and check your manual for the meaning on your model. Run the ten-minute vent test and clean the lint screen, because many codes trace back to airflow. Restart once after a rest, and if the code returns, tell us the brand, the model number and the code when you book.
LG: D80, D90 and D95
| Code | What it points to | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| D80 | A significant exhaust restriction, about 80 percent according to repair sources | Clear the vent soon |
| D90 | A heavier restriction | Stop and clear the whole vent run |
| D95 | A severe restriction, and the dryer may stop | Do not use it until the vent is clear |
These are LG Flow Sense airflow warnings. See the full guide: LG dryer D80 error: meaning and fix.
What do LG dryer codes D80, D90 and D95 mean?
They are Flow Sense warnings that the exhaust airflow is restricted, roughly 80, 90 and 95 percent according to repair and parts sources. They point to the vent: the lint screen, the duct behind the dryer, the wall duct and the outside hood. At the highest level the dryer may stop. Clear the vent, and do not bypass the code.
Samsung code groups
Samsung’s own support pages group dryer codes by what they point to. Some appear only on certain models, so check your manual too.
| Group | Codes | What it points to |
|---|---|---|
| Door | dC, dE, dF, do, d0, 1 DC, 1 dF | The door, its latch or its sensors |
| Temperature | tS, t5, tC, tO, t0, tE, tE3, tC5, tCS, 1 tC, 1tC5, 1tCS | A temperature problem, or the temperature sensors |
| Heating or overheating | HC, hE, HC4, 1 HC | The dryer is overheating, often from a blocked lint screen or vent |
| Voltage | 9C1, 9E, 2E, 9E1 | An abnormal voltage supply: check the dryer is on its own circuit with no extension cord |
| Power frequency | FC, FE, 1FC | An invalid power source frequency |
| Buttons | bE, bE2, bC2, 6E and similar | A stuck button on the control panel |
| Motor | 3C | A motor error |
| Gas ignition | HC2 | A gas ignition error on gas models |
What do Samsung dryer error codes mean?
Samsung groups them: dC, dE, dF and do point to the door, the t codes to temperature or its sensors, HC and hE to overheating, 9C1 and 9E to the voltage supply, FC to the power frequency, bE to a stuck button, 3C to the motor and HC2 to gas ignition. Some codes are model specific, so check your manual.
What does HC mean on a Samsung dryer?
HC and hE are heating codes that indicate the dryer is overheating, often from a clogged lint screen or a restricted vent. Clear the lint screen and the whole vent run, restart after the dryer cools, and if the code returns, have the dryer checked. HC2 on a gas model is a gas ignition error, so stop and call.
Whirlpool: F01
On many Whirlpool dryers, F01 points to an electronic control fault. Whirlpool’s guidance, as summarized by a service company, is to switch the breaker off for five minutes, restore power and run a timed dry cycle. If F01 returns, have the dryer serviced. Other F codes vary widely by model and region, so check your manual.
What does F01 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?
It usually points to an electronic control fault. The first step Whirlpool suggests is to switch the dryer’s breaker off for five minutes, restore power and run a timed dry cycle. If F01 returns, it needs service, and a power interruption or surge can trigger it. Other F codes differ by model, so check your manual.
Maytag, GE, Frigidaire, Kenmore and other brands
Code meanings vary by model and year, and many dryers use blinking lights instead of numbers. We do not list unverified meanings for these brands. Check your manual, write the code down, and tell us when you book. See all brands we repair and the symptom checker.
What if my brand or code is not listed?
Check your manual for the meaning on your model, write the code down exactly and tell us when you book, with the brand and the model number. We do not list meanings we could not verify, because a wrong meaning can send you to the wrong part. The symptom checker also works without a code.
When a code means stop
- A gas smell: leave the house and call 911 and Atmos Energy at 866.322.8667
- A burning smell, smoke or a hot plug: stop and unplug the dryer
- A code that returns at once after a restart, with a clear vent
- Any overheating code with a very hot cabinet
See the gas smell guide and the emergency repair page.

Frequently asked questions
Can I reset a dryer error code?
Switching the breaker off for a few minutes and back on resets the electronics, and many codes clear. A code that returns means the cause is still there, so find it. Do not keep resetting a dryer that overheats or smells hot.
Do all dryers show error codes?
No. Many show codes on a display, and many use blinking lights or none. The manual explains what the lights mean on your model.
Why does a code return after I clean the vent?
The restriction may be deeper in the run, or a sensor may be reading wrongly. Check the duct behind the dryer and the outside hood, and have the airflow measured if it persists.
Are error codes the same on gas and electric dryers?
Many are, but gas models add ignition codes such as Samsung’s HC2. Your manual lists the codes for your model.
How do I find my model number?
On a tag inside the door frame or around the drum opening, and sometimes on the back. Photograph it, and share it with the code when you book.
